Cross-Dressing Doctor Richard Sharpe Found Hanged in Cell

A cross-dressing dermatologist serving a life sentence in prison for killing his estranged wife was found dead in his prison cell. Richard Sharpe, who shot his wife Karen with a hunting rifle in 2000, was found hanged Monday evening by his cellmate. He was declared dead at a hospital.

Sharpe murdered Karen in front of her brother and other witnesses as two of their children slept in another room. Prosecutors say he killed Karen because he didn’t want to lose $3 million to her in their divorce. The 54-year-old member of the Harvard Medical School facility drew national attention when pictures of him dressed as a woman were published after his arrest. Karen Sharpe claimed in court documents that Sharpe took her birth control pills in an effort to enlarge his breasts.

At his trial, a defense psychiatrist testified that Sharpe suffered from a half-dozen psychiatric disorders. Prosecutors accused Sharpe of faking symptoms of mental illness to fool doctors and the jury.

Sharpe ran several businesses outside of his medical practice and made millions in the stock market.
