Ron Asheton, guitarist for the legendary rock band The Stooges, was found dead inside his Michigan home on Tuesday. Asheton was 60-years-old.
According to police there was no indication of foul-play in Asheton’s death and it appeared he died of natural causes.
Asheton was joined by his brother Scott on drums and the late Dave Alexander on bass while Iggy Pop fronted the band that became one of the most influential punk sounds of the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Stooges eventually disbanded in 1974 as a result of pop’s highly publicized heroin addiction became too much for the band to overcome.
Ron, Scott and Mike Watt eventually formed The New Stooges and in 2003 Iggy Pop returned to the band and in 2007 they released The Weirdness.
The Stooges are on the shortlist for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
