Nancy Pelosi Re-Elected as Speaker of the House
Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was re-elected as the Speaker of the House on Tuesday as the 111th Congressional session began.
Pelosi, the first female Speaker of the House in U.S. history, was selected by her fellow members of the House of Representatives over Republican John Boehner on the first day of the 111th Congress.
Pelosi received 256 votes from Democrats to Boehner's 178 Republican votes. In 2007, all 233 Democrats voted for Pelosi, while all 202 Republicans voted for Boehner.
Pelosi will now lead a Democratic majority that has increased by 20 members since last Congressional session, in addition to the selection of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama to the White House. She received a lot of attention after spearheading the Wall Street bailout, along with Rep. Barney Frank and Rep. Harry Reid.
