Colorado Charter School Principal Wins Leadership Award

Randy Zimmerman, principal of Character, Integrity, Vision and the Arts (CIVA) Charter High School, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, has been named 2011 School Leadership Award Winner by the Colorado League of Charter Schools.  Zimmerman was selected out of over 30 nominees for the award.

The School Leadership Award recognizes an individual directly involved with a Colorado charter school who demonstrates significant influence in developing or maintaining a charter school, improving school accountability and performance, or driving other aspects of school excellence.

Zimmerman was nominated for the School Leadership Award by the teachers and staff at CIVA for his incredible passion and dedication to all CIVA students and empowering CIVA staff to take pride in their work.

CIVA started working with Quantum Learning in 2008, and according to Zimmerman, “I thought Quantum Learning would be a great fit for us, which is why I introduced their professional development programs to our staff.  The best thing in the classroom is to ensure student success as a competent and encouraging teacher, and Quantum Learning keeps our classrooms engaging, our teachers enthused and our students are more successful as a result.”  Zimmerman goes on to say, “Quantum Learning has completely revolutionized our school.”

Since incorporating Quantum Learning methodologies, CIVA ninth grade reading levels went from 33 percent proficient in 2008 to 76 percent in 2010. Tenth grade writing scores also increased from 28 percent proficient in 2008 to 48 percent by 2010. Math scores have also seen increases.

Test scores weren’t the only change CIVA saw from incorporating Quantum Learning. “Perhaps the best thing about Quantum Learning and CIVA is that it has re-inspired our teachers to do their best and to enjoy their professions.  As student engagement has increased, discipline issues have faded away.  As a result, our teachers are spending more time on lesson planning and are having more fun and success in the classrooms,” says Zimmerman.
