John Atta Mills Sworn in as Ghana’s President

Just days after beating rival Nana Akufo-Addo by less than 0.5% of the votes John Atta Mills has been sworn in as Ghana’s new president at a ceremony in Independence Square in the capital of Accra.

John Atta Mills, leader of the National Democratic Congress, replaces John Kufuor of the New Patriotic Party who served the maximum two-terms.

Thousands of people gathered to witness the handing over of power, just the second time in the country’s history in which the presidential office was handed over to an opposition leader.

Atta Mills has pledged to be a leader for all of Ghana, setting aside the differences between the country’s two main parties.
