Sri Sathya Sai Baba, the Hindu guru who allegedly performed miracles and who claimed to be the reincarnation of spiritual leader Sai Baba of Shirdi, has died. According to the Puttaparthi hospital that treated Sri Sathya Sai Baba in his final days, the 84-year-old left “his earthly body” Sunday after suffering from respiratory failure.
Although Sri Sathya Sai Baba helped set up trusts to fund religious retreats, hospitals, charities and schools, critics called him out to be a fraud who sexually abused many of his followers. The guru denied the allegations and maintained claims he had supernatural powers.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh released a statement on his death. "His teachings were rooted in the universal ideals of truth, right conduct, peace, love and nonviolence. I express my sincere condolences to the millions of his followers, disciples and well wishers,” he said.
The Dalai Lama also expressed sadness over the news. “I am saddened by the passing away of the respected spiritual leader,” he said. “I would like to convey my condolences and prayers to his followers, devotees and admirers.”
