12 Step Drug Rehab |

How the 12-Step drug rehab program differs from others

Historically, the 12-Step drug rehab Program was published in the late 1930’s as a set of guidelines and principles for recovering alcoholics.  The American Psychological Association summarizes the 12-Step process as including the following elements:

  • admitting that you cannot control your addictions and compulsive behavior
  • recognizing that your strength can only come from a higher power
  • examining the mistakes you made in the past with the assistance of an experienced 12-Step member (a.k.a. a sponsor)
  • making amends for these mistakes that you have made
  • using a new behavioral code in order to live a new life
  • helping other individuals like you that are suffering with their addictions and compulsions

Regardless of the above, the most significant difference between the 12-Step drug rehab program and others is that it views the consequences that result of all three dimensions of the human structure – mental, physical, and spiritual.

Criticisms and confidentiality

As with any alternative addiction treatment and recovery programs, the 12-Step drug rehab program is subject to criticism.  These criticisms are just as the pathological issues that they address.  Some individuals have been successful in recovering for life while others have not.  The biggest criticisms involve the belief that only a higher power can help the individual and that the success rates differ from one person to the next.  Additionally, where their efficacy and universal applicability are concerned, these tend to be the most common criticisms.

The confidentiality factor stems from the fact that the 12-Step drug rehab program encourages the participant to practice what is called the spiritual principle of anonymity.  This usually relates to the public media and members of the program are encouraged to respect one another’s confidentiality.  Although this is not a legal mandate, it is considered the norm of the program and there are no consequences of a legal nature that the member needs to be concerned with.
