The
United States will be heading up an international force that has been designed
to combat piracy off the coast of Somalia.
Somali
pirates have targeted shipping vessels, cargo ships and tankers passing through
the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean and after commandeering the ships they
demand large ransoms for the release of the crew and the ship.
More
than 100 pirate attacks over the past year led to a call for an international
body to be formed to combat the attacks and that force is now expected to be in
operation by the end of January.
Dubbed
Combined Task Force 151 (CTF-151), the force will include the UK, Canada,
France, Denmark, Pakistan, the Netherlands and at least 15 other countries.
U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Terence McKnight has been tapped as commander of CTF-151.
The
new force will be patrolling a 480-mile stretch used as a shipping lane.
