Mexican Actress gets sentenced to jail for immigration fraud

By: Daun Lee

Fernanda Romero and her husband were sentenced to spend 15 weekends in jail for immigration fraud, according to the LA Times. Romero and her husband Kent Ross admitted to a federal judge that they committed marriage fraud so the actress could enter the United States. Romero confessed to paying Ross $5,000, to marry her and it is alleged they maintained separate residences.

Romero has appeared in a few movies, which include ‘Drag Me to Hell’ and ‘The Eye’, but is most well-known for her role on the Latino soap opera ‘Eternamente Tuya’. She has lived and worked in the US for ten years.

The fraudulent couple appeared in court last April, but a mistrial was declared due to juror hostility. Immigrants who are married to US citizens are allowed work visas, and eventual naturalization. Marrying a US citizen is an easier route to citizenship, but can create serious problems down the road that may require the retention of an immigration lawyer.

Millions of immigrants come to the United States on an annual basis, they are attracted the personal freedoms and economic opportunities. Remaining here illegally can lead to deportation, and jeopardize any future chances of naturalization. Immigrants can apply for US citizenship, which is easier with the aid of an immigration attorney. Although the road to citizenship can be difficult, the effort expended by the person and their immigration lawyer will make the endeavor worthwhile.
