It
appears that the 20-year career that John Smoltz has enjoyed in an Atlanta
Braves uniform could be coming to an end as reports have indicated the future
Hall of Famer will be in a Boston Red Sox uniform in 2009.
Smoltz
appeared in just six games in 2008 after undergoing shoulder surgery but he
remains confident that he can still pitch. He has compiled a 210-147 record and
posted 154 saves with an ERA of 3.26 over his career but his latest surgery has
left many wondering if the right-hander is done.
The
Red Sox appear ready to find out as they have reportedly offered Smoltz, 41, a
$5.5 million base salary along with $5 million in incentives.
Boston
has established one of the deepest rotations in baseball with Josh Beckett, Jon
Lester, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Tim Wakefield and Brad Penny already set. Smoltz has
said he wants to be a starter but during a three-year period earlier in his
career he was one of the most dominant closers in the game, recording 144
saves.
