The Clinical Neuropsychologist Journal recently reported that their research shows that one in four adults, who say they have ADHD, are actually faking or exaggerating their symptoms in order to get stimulant medications.
Correlating with that study, MSNBC conducted a poll that showed 38 percent of doctors suspect that a patient has either faked or exaggerated their symptoms in order to obtain a prescription for medication used to treat ADHD.
“There are so many classes of drugs that are a double-edged sword in our society today,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside
Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment. “Unfortunately, medications used to treat ADHD are among those that can be abused. In the hands of someone who doesn’t truly have ADHD, they produce disastrous results. That’s why it is important for physicians to conduct a thorough analysis, including past treatment history from previous physicians, in order to make the proper determination if their patient does have ADHD and, if they do, what ADHD medications are best suited for their patient.”
Nearly eight million people, close to four percent of Americans, are estimated to have ADHD, with the majority of adults diagnosed first as children.
