FedEx BCS National Championship: Florida Gators and Oklahoma Sooners Meet in Title Game

The 2008 college football season will come to a close Thursday night with either the Florida Gators (12-1) or the Oklahoma Sooners (12-1) being crowned national champions as the two meet in the BCS title game at Dolphins Stadium.

Florida has been led by 2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow who put together another sensational season in which he brought the Gators back from a  potentially devastating loss to Ole Miss to an SEC title and trip to the BCS national Championship game.

The Gators have won nine straight, the last a 31-20 victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide, to finish #2 in the BCS rankings and earn the trip to Miami.  During that nine-game winning streak the Gators have averaged 49.4 points per game and the 20 points allowed to Alabama were the most the defense surrendered during that stretch. Florida currently has the third best scoring offense in the nation but they’ll be facing the team with the best.

Oklahoma averaged 54 points per game and have put together five straight games with 61 points or more on their way to the BCS #1 ranking. The Sooners bounced back from their loss to the Texas Longhorns earlier this year to win their last seven games including blowouts of Texas Tech and Oklahoma State and then Missouri in the Big 12 title game.

Sam Bradford, the 2008 Heisman Trophy winner, has led the high-powered offense that incorporates a pair of thousand yard rushers in Chris Brown and DeMarco Murray along with thousand yard receiver Juaquin Iglesias and big-time tight end Jermaine Gresham.

Thursday’s matchup will be pitting the unstoppable force against the immovable object as the Sooners offense faces a Gators defense that has allowed just 12.8 points per game. While Oklahoma’s defense has gotten a bad rap their run defense is as solid as the Gators, ranking just one spot below Florida.

Kickoff for the FedEx BCS National Championship game is set for 8:00 p.m. ET.
