Rwanda’s
army chief-of-staff James Kabarebe has met with ex-Nigerian President Olusegun
Obasanjo and Congolese President Joseph Kabila to discuss a resolution to the rebel
conflicts that have dominated the eastern DR Congo since August.
The
focus of the talks concerned the suppression of Rwandan Hutu rebels that have targeted
the minority Tutsi community in eastern DR Congo. The Congolese Tutsi rebels
have carried out constant offensives against the Hutus and militiamen and the conflict
has left more than 250,000 displaced due to the violence.
During
the talks Rwanda agreed to provide intelligence to support a military campaign
to remove the Huti rebels from eastern DR Congo.
Obasanjo,
acting as a UN mediator, has been involved in talks with the Tutsi rebel group
led by Gen. Laurent Nkunda and the Congolese government in an attempt to broker
a peace deal.
The
UN has said both Rwanda and DR Congo have been using rebel forces to conduct
fighting against each other.
