According to statistics recently released by the Foundation for a Drug Free World, alcohol abuse is still the most rampant drug problem in the United States.
Of the 3.9 million people who sought substance abuse treatment in America, 2.5 million were alcoholics.
These statistics fly in the face of arguments to legalize marijuana and other drugs. Alcohol is the most broadly abused substance in America, and creates the most problems.
The demand for alcoholism rehabilitation has never been greater, and has put quite a burden on existing drug rehabilitation facilities, many of which are not designed specifically to treat alcoholism.
For a long time, alcoholism was considered by the rehab community to be different from drug addiction, but more and more public opinion is shifting to view alcohol abuse the same as any other substance abuse problem.
While it does have many of the same aspects, alcoholism can actually be more difficult to crack than drug addiction, according to new information released by the Drug Crisis Hotline. According to their recently released article, the prevalence of alcohol in our culture, heavy advertisements for its consumption, and the lack of a social stigma against using it, all equate to alcohol being one of the hardest substances to kick.
The Drug Crisis Hotline also released a series of articles that provide help for alcoholism and
advice for choosing an alcohol rehab clinic.
