In an effort to foil the “brither movement,” the White House released President Barack Obama’s official long-form birth certificate on Wednesday. The document shows President Obama was born at the Kapiolani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 4, 1961 at 7:24 p.m. Signatures from the attending doctor and the president’s mother are included on the certificate.
In a blog posted on the White House’s official website, communications director Dan Pfeiffer said President Obama released his birth certificate because the debate over his citizenship was becoming a “distraction.” “The President believed the distraction over his birth certificate wasn’t good for the country. It may have been good politics and good TV, but it was bad for the American people and distracting from the many challenges we face as a country,” he wrote.
President Obama addressed the issue himself in an appearance this morning. “We do not have time for this silliness. We’ve got better stuff to do. I’ve got better stuff to do. We’ve got big problems to solve,” he said.
The release of the birth certificate comes after weeks of pressure from Donald Trump, who has admitted he is considering running in the 2012 presidential election. The real estate mogul demanded in numerous interviews that President Obama release the document. “I’m very proud of myself because I’ve accomplished something that nobody else has been able to accomplish. I am really honored, frankly, to have played such a big role in hopefully--hopefully--getting rid of this issue,” Trump told reporters in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
