An argument between an Afghan military pilot and American military personnel turned deadly Wednesday. NATO officials confirm 9 Americans were killed when the pilot opened fire during a meeting at the Afghan air force base at North Kabul International Airport.
The dead included 8 United States soldiers and 1 civilian contractor. A spokesman for the Afghan Air Corps says 5 Afghan soldiers were wounded in the shooting. The gunman was killed by NATO forces.
NATO has denied the Taliban’s claims of responsibility for the shooting. "We had worked hard on this plan for a long time. He (the gunman) was cooperating with us since long time and he was providing us information about military air operations for a long time,” claimed Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid.
“This attack indicates that we can access any security forces facilities of the enemy we want," Mujahid added. "We have our infiltrators in all sections."
