Israel and Hamas Continue Fighting in Gaza, Ignore UN Demands for a Ceasefire

Israel and Hamas have continued military offensives inside Gaza despite a call from the United Nations for an immediate ceasefire.

The UN Security Council demanded the two sides end their nearly two-week conflict inside the Gaza Strip but Israel and Hamas militants have said such an act was impossible due to current conditions.

While Israel has respected a three-hour ceasefire for the third day to allow humanitarian aid to those in need the attacks will continue the moment the third hour strikes.

Hamas has expressed anger about the UN’s failure to consult them concerning the ceasefire, saying the interests of their people have not been addressed.

Israel has pointed to the continued rocket attacks launched by Hamas as evidence that a ceasefire was impossible. They began their offensive against Hamas on Dec. 27 and one week later they began sending ground troops into Gaza in what was considered a second phase to their battle.
