Stocks Decline on Weak Unemployment Data

Investors sent stocks sharply lower Friday after the government reported fewer job losses than feared in December, but also an unemployment rate above 7 percent.

In midmorning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 113.81, or 1.30 percent, to 8,628.65.

Broader stock indicators also lost ground. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 14.20, or 1.56 percent, to 895.53, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 35.48, or 2.19 percent, to 1,581.53.

Bond prices were mixed. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, rose to 2.45 percent from 2.44 percent late Thursday. The dollar rose against most other major currencies, while gold prices fell.

Oil prices dropped below $40 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
