Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich Impeached Following Investigation

The Illinois House of Representatives voted 114-1 to impeach embattled Governor Rod Blagojevich following an investigation into alleged criminal activities related to bribery and an attempt to sell the Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama following his presidential election victory.

Blagojevich will now face a trial by the Illinois State Senate and if he is found guilty he would be removed from office.

Friday’s vote for impeachment came on the heels of an investigation in which a 21-member committee had access to FBI information regarding alleged improprieties tied to Blagojevich.

While Blagojevich has denied any wrong-doing and has vowed to fight to keep his office he has had little support from state senators. Casting his vote to impeach Blagojevich Democratic Rep. Jack D Franks stated, “It’s our duty to clean up the mess and stop the freak show that's become Illinois government.”
