A
severe drought in Kenya has left the country in dire straits; leading to a
declaration of a national emergency as more than 10 million people now face food
shortages due to crop failure.
President
Mwai Kibaki made the declaration following a meeting with ministers of the governing
coalition concerning the food crisis.
Following
the meeting a government statement was issued which declared, “President Kibaki
told the food security committee that the entire government must focus on the
urgency of providing food to all Kenyans after the failed rains in the last two
seasons and reduced production due to last year's post-election challenges.”
The
food shortage that has left Kenya devastated has led the government to import
large quantities of maize and reduce the price of seeds.
Many
have tied the food shortage to the violence that dominated last year’s
presidential election in which more than 300,000 people were left displaced. As
a result of the violence many farmers were too frightened to plant crops.
