Charles
Barkley will be taking a leave of absence from his position as an NBA analyst
for TNT following his arrest on Dec. 31 on suspicion of drunken driving.
Barkley
was pulled over after running a stop sign shortly after leaving a nightclub in
Scottsdale, Arizona. After refusing to take a breathalyzer Barkley submitted to
a blood test which revealed a blood-alcohol level of .149; the legal limit in
Arizona is .08.
David
Levy, president of TNT Sports, issued a statement regarding Barkley’s decision to
step away from his position at TNT saying, “When I spoke with Charles, he was
apologetic for the events that transpired and it was obvious he understands the
significance of the situation. This is an important time for Charles as he
deals with the legal and personal issues that confront him. Charles is a valued
part of the Turner Sports organization and we are concerned for his
well-being."
The
former NBA MVP and 11-time All-Star is expected to miss several weeks and no
return date has been set.
