Three Former employees of American Apparel sue for defamation

By: Daun Lee

Three women, who once worked for American Apparel, are suing their former boss Dov Charney for defamation. The women allege that he posted nude photos of them on the internet. The photos appeared on blogs which they believe Charney set up in retaliation for the sexual harassment charges they filed against him in March.

The suit claims that a blog, which appeared to be set up by the three defendants, named in a sexual harassment suit, contained nude photos and allege the women were attempting to extort Charney. In addition to the nude photos, the blogs contained sexually suggestive photos of the three women. The women are suing him for defamation and invasion of privacy.

On March 4 in NY, Irene Morales, who was a salesperson for the garment company, filed a suit against Charney claiming he coerced her into sex in order to keep her job. After she filed her suit two other women in California file similar harassment suits most likely aided by a sexual harassment lawyer.

The lawyer representing Charney, Peter Shey, says the sexual harassment case is “contrived and baseless” and filed to “garner media attention in the effort to force quick cash settlements.”

In the workplace, harassment of a sexual nature is relatively common for women and some men. The efforts of sexual harassment attorneys have managed to reduce some of the occurrences of harassment. The problem is far from disappearing and the more women retain sexual harassment lawyers to stand up for their rights the closer we get to eliminating the problem.
