The elusive actress Katie Holmes won a defamation suit against celebrity magazine Star for $50 million. She filed the suit after the magazine printed a cover story, which claimed she had a drug problem and underwent addiction treatment. They will also print an apology to Katie in their May 9th edition and will give a donation to a charity Holmes supports, Dizzy Feet , which pays for dance lessons for underprivileged youth.
The headline said “Addiction Nightmare. Katie Drug shocker.” The article didn’t actually say Katie did drugs, but did allude to drug treatment the actress supposedly underwent through the Church of Scientology.
Though Katie doesn’t have a drug problem there are innumerable people who do. The abuse of prescription drugs have been rising steadily over the past ten years. Rehabilitation facilities saw close to a 300 percent increase of people who are addicted to prescription drugs like oxycodone and vicodin.
The people who admitted to driving under the influence of prescriptions drugs, and most likely required a DUI lawyer, were close to 10 million when the National Highway Traffic Safety Commission did the survey in 2006. Whether a person gets charged with a DUI because of prescription drugs or alcohol, they will need to hire a DUI attorney to represent them in court. The punishments are severe for the offender and usually entail jail time and the loss of a driver’s license. The expertise of a DUI lawyer can work to reduce the penalties.
