Royal Wedding: Prince William and Catherine Middleton Exchange Vows

The highly anticipated royal wedding between Prince William and his longtime love Kate Middleton took place Friday morning at Westminster Abbey in London. The couple, who dated for 8 years before becoming engaged in November 2010, exchanged traditional vows in front of about 1,900 guests. The ceremony lasted one hour and featured a prayer written by the couple.

“God our Father, we thank you for our families; for the love that we share and for the joy of our marriage. In the busyness of each day keep our eyes fixed on what is real and important in life and help us to be generous with our time and love and energy. Strengthened by our union help us to serve and comfort those who suffer,” the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said.

Kate, who will now be known as Catherine, wore a Sara Burton for Alexander McQueen gown, a 1936 Cartier tiara belonging to Queen Elizabeth and Robinson Pelham diamond earrings given to her by her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton. William wore the uniform of the Colonel of the Irish Guards.

After a carriage ride to Buckingham Palace, Prince William and Catherine stepped out on the front balcony for a kiss at 1:25 p.m. The balcony is where Prince Charles and Princess Diana kissed following their wedding in 1981.

A wedding lunch hosted by Queen Elizabeth was planned for 600 guests. Later in the evening, dinner and dancing will be held at the palace for about 300 guests.
