You’ve completed alcohol or
drug treatment, and that’s certainly something to celebrate, but in a way your journey is just beginning. Survival after treatment takes planning and determination. It also takes a willingness to not try to do it all alone. Here are several ways to not just survive but thrive in the recovery process:
Find New Hobbies & Interests– Maybe your treatment center specialized in a healthy, organic diet. Why not try learning to cook some of your favorite dishes you sampled there? As you take care of yourself by filling your body with nutritious, healthful foods, you’ll find it easier to make other health choices as well. Connecting with nature is also a good way to stay tuned in to your sobriety. Walks, hikes, runs or biking are all easy ways to take in the great outdoors.
Mark Every Milestone– Celebrate even small victories like avoiding a friend or situation that could have triggered that old desire to use. Weekly dinners with friends or a regular coffee date can help remind you of the new healthy choices you’re making.
Don’t Go It Alone– A support system isn’t just a good idea, it’s critical to successful long-term recovery. Choose friends who can provide clear thinking as well as encouragement. Meetings are also a great way to stay in touch with others who know all too well what you’re going through.
