Atlanta baseball player arrested for DUI

By: Daun Lee

Derek Lowe, who plays for the Atlanta Braves, was arrested Thursday night for DUI. Troopers pulled over his Porsche on Peachtree Street in Atlanta because he appeared to be racing with another car. The officer noticed the smell of alcohol and conducted a field sobriety test which prompted his arrest.

The thirty seven year old pitcher has been charged with DUI, improper lane change and reckless driving. Lowe refused to take a breathalyzer before he was released. According to NBC sports, Lowe is the fifth major league baseball player to be arrested for a DUI in 2011.  Athletes are keeping DUI attorneys very busy.

The driver of the other car was charged only with reckless driving.

The Atlanta Braves released the following statement, “We are very concerned disappointed about the events involving Derek Lowe overnight. We are currently gathering information and plan to address this matter later today.” Representatives for Derek Lowe have not released a statement as of yet.

People often take a casual approach to drunken driving and often think they are able to drive. Drunken or drugged driving account for a large number of traffic fatalities, because of this police are specially trained to identify impaired drivers and the courts are particularly tough on DUI offenders, but a DUI lawyer can work to reduce some of the penalties. A DUI can involve jail time and the loss of driving privileges.  A DUI attorney is qualified to help their clients to minimize the impact of these penalties.
