Death Toll from Costa Rica Earthquake Reaches 19

The 6.1-magnitude earthquake that rocked Costa Rica last Thursday has claimed 19 lives and rescuers have predicted the death toll will rise as they reach remote areas that were struck by landslides.

Thursday’s tremor struck at Poas Volcano National Park just north of San Jose is considered one of the strongest to hit Costa Rica in more than a century.

Costa Rica has declared a state of emergency in San Jose as well as Cartago, Alajuela and Heredia as rescue workers continue their search for survivors. At least 40 people are still said to be missing.
