Indonesian Ferry Carrying 267 People Sinks, Rescue Efforts Hurt by Storm

An Indonesian ferry traveling from Pare Pare in South Sulawesi to Samarinda in East Kalimantan sunk early Sunday morning after encountering strong storms and rescue efforts to save the 267 people on board have been hampered by high waves and dark skies.

While 18 people have been rescued, including the captain, the death toll is expected to be very high. The captain of the Teratai Prima told officials about 150 people managed to jump off the ferry before it went under.

Rescue officials have said some of those who jumped overboard managed to float on lifeboats but many were left to battle the strong waves.
