NFL Playoffs Schedule: Pittsburgh Steelers Host San Diego Chargers for Spot in AFC Championship Game

The AFC will get the final piece of its championship puzzle on Sunday after the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Diego Chargers square off for the second time this year.

Pittsburgh’s 11-10 victory over the Chargers in Week 11 started a five-game winning streak, leading them to an AFC North title and first-round bye in the playoffs. For the Chargers, that Week 11 loss began a three-game losing streak that appeared to end their season. Of course San Diego won their last four games of the year, including a Week 17 victory over the Denver Broncos that gave them the AFC West title.

Last week the Chargers managed to shock the Indianapolis Colts with a 23-17 overtime victory to earn a ticket to Pittsburgh. With LaDainian Tomlinson sidelined the Chargers have relied heavily on Darren Sproles and he has responded with back-to-back 100-yardrushing games as well as adding chunks of yards receiving and on kick returns.

Those yards may be harder to come by against the Steelers who have the NFL’s best defense. They allowed just 80.3 yards per game on the ground and 156.9 yards in the air. While Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers was the NFL’s top ranked passer his offensive line will have to keep James Harrison in check. Named defensive player of the year, Harrison collected 16 sacks at the linebacker position and was in on 101 tackles.

In their Week 11 game the Steelers defense held Rivers to 164 yards passing and two interceptions while limiting the running game to just 66 yards. The win was the Steelers 13^th straight at home against the Chargers, not a good sign for San Diego on Sunday.

As much as the Steelers rely on their defense they have a capable offense that can move the ball when clicking. They’ll have Ben Roethlisberger back on Sunday after a concussion knocked him out of their final game of the regular season.
