Israel Nearing Goals in Gaza but Military Offensive will Continue

While Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has said the goals of Israel’s military offensive in Gaza are nearing he also maintained that the fighting would continue and on Sunday that was evident as at least 29 people were killed across the territory.

Now in its third week, the Israeli military offensive in Gaza has killed nearly 900 Palestinians, many of them being civilians. Israel has warned that the attacks would continue until they destroyed Hamas targets and secured areas that the militants were using to launch rocket attacks.

On Saturday leaflets were dropped in Gaza by Israel warning civilians that a “third phase” of the operation was imminent and they should stay away from Hamas locations.

Olmert spoke of the progress being made in Gaza, telling his cabinet “Israel is nearing the goals which it set itself, but more patience, determination and effort is still demanded.”

Both sides have said a ceasefire is impossible at this time. Israel has demanded an end to Hamas rocket attacks into southern Israel while Hamas wants Israel to end their blockade of Gaza.
