A proposed wildness protection plan that would include Oregon’s Mount Hood, Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California and parts of Jefferson National Forest in Virginia could be voted on by the Senate on Sunday in an effort to move the bill forward.
The wilderness protection plan has been in the works for several years and been met by constant derision by opponents along the way. Those opponents have criticized the huge price tag, about $4 billion over five years, and pointed to earmarks that made little sense including a “road to nowhere” in Alaska’s Izembek National Wildlife Refuge.
Sunday’s session would look to limit the efforts of the bill’s opponents and push the measure to the next stage.
As part of the bill the childhood home of former President Bill Clinton would be designated a national historic site. The bill would also set aside more than 2 million acres in nine states as wilderness and continue to protect water resources, rivers and national parks.
