Delray Recovery Center Beats Ativan Addiction WIth Ativan Drug Rehab

Ativan is one of the many brand names for Lorazepam (generic name), a highly potent medication for treating anxiety disorders.  It is classified in the benzodiazepine family and displays all of the common side effects which are inherent with benzodiazepine medications. Typically, Ativan is prescribed as one of the following medications:
  • muscle relaxant
  • hypnotic/sedative
  • anxiolytic
  • anticonvulsant
  • amnesic

Additionally, it may also be prescribed for the treatment of acute seizures, aggressive behavior displayed by hospital patients, anxiety, and insomnia over a short period of time.  Ativan targets a specific brain neurotransmitter which is known as gamma-aminobutyric acid.  By increasing the function of this neurotransmitter, it inhibits the central nervous system leading to a significant decrease in both mental and physical excitement.

Side effects

As with other prescription medications, Ativan displays certain side effects.  There are the more common ones and then there are those that are more severe in nature and may demand medical attention in the process.

Common side effects:

  • weakness
  • unsteadiness
  • lightheadedness
  • headache
  • drowsiness
  • dizziness
  • clumsiness

Severe side effects:

  • memory loss
  • mental or radical mood changes
  • severe allergic reactions (e.g. breathing difficulties and/or tightness in the chest, hives, severe itching and swelling of the face, lips, mouth, or tongue)

If you or someone in your family who is taking the drug is experiencing the above 3, you should consult with your family physician immediately or call emergency services immediately if there are severe reactions like the ones mentioned above.

Addiction

Ativan displays a high potential for being abused and addictions developing, just like with any Lorazepam-based medication.  Typically, abuse displays itself in two forms.  Either the use of Ativan is continued over a long period of time even if the physician is against it, or the individual uses it recreationally so they can get high.  As a result of this, Ativan is now considered a drug threat by the DEA along with a number of other prescription medications in the US today.
It is typically classified in the category of illegally trafficked prescription medications.  Addictions to this drug are growing in number to the extent that Delray Recovery Center now offers Ativan drug rehab programs to treat the issue and enable the individual to recover from their addiction.
