NATO has expressed strong doubts over claims immediate family members of embattled Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi was killed in an air strike in Tripoli Saturday night.
On Sunday, the Libyan government claimed three of Gadhafi’s grandchildren and his second-youngest son, Saif al Arab, were killed when NATO targeted the home of Saif. Gadhafi and his wife allegedly escaped unharmed. A government spokesman called the strike “a direct operation to assassinate the leader of this country.”
NATO said a “known command and control building in the Bab Al Azizya neighborhood” was targeted, not the residence of anyone in the Gadhafi family. "All NATO's targets are military in nature and have been clearly linked to the Gadhafi regime's systematic attacks on the Libyan population and populated areas. We do not target individuals,” said NATO Lt.-Gen. Charles Bouchard, commander of Operation Unified Protector.
Rebel leaders in Benghazi have also expressed doubts about the Libyan government’s claims. Many rebels believe the claims are a trick to garner criticism against NATO air strikes.
