Mayor Bloomberg proposes sending immigrants to Detroit

The city of Detroit has been struggling for years. The city has lost 25 percent of its population and has an unemployment rate of 50 percent. The Mayor of New York city Michael Bloomberg appeared on Meet the Press and had a proposal to solve Detroit’s along with reforming immigration.

According to the NY Daily News, Bloomberg proposed that the federal government should pass laws that would allow people to immigrate as long as they agree to move to Detroit to work and live from five to ten years.

Mary Dumas, spokesperson for Detroit Mayor David Bing says the city is used to unsolicited advice from other Mayors. She said that allowing illegal immigrants to come to Detroit would take serious considerations before it becomes a possibility. Since new immigrants need assistance from the government to establish themselves, the Detroit lawmakers must evaluate whether they could offer help.

Bloomberg maintains that millions of immigrants are clamoring to come to the US and relocation them to Detroit could “kill two birds with one stone.”

Immigrants come to the US in search of greater economic opportunities and more personal freedoms. Becoming a US citizen is easier for the immigrant if they retain an immigration attorney to help them through the naturalization process. Understanding the process that one must undergo to become a citizen can be complicated, which is made even more difficult for a person who speaks English as a second language. The right immigration lawyer will be a necessary guide on the road to citizenship.
