Russia
has agreed to resume supplying gas to countries through its pipeline in
Ukraine, ending a dispute that has left many European countries struggling to
heat their homes.
At
a news conference in Brussels the new agreement was announced by Alexander
Medvedev, deputy chief executive of Russian gas giant Gazprom, where he stated,
“If there are no obstacles... gas supplies will be restarted at 8 o'clock.”
That
restart may resume but it could still be a day or two before supplies resume to
normal.
Gazprom
stopped sending gas supplies through Ukraine after a dispute regarding $1.5
billion in unpaid bills and a failure to agree on a new contract. Russia relies
heavily on their pipeline through Ukraine to ship gas to the rest of the European
Union and that process was halted after Russia accused Ukraine of siphoning gas
from the line.
