Ohio Teenager Convicted of Killing Mother after Arguing about Video Game

An Ohio judge convicted 17-year-old Daniel Petric in the shooting death of his mother after rejecting his lawyer’s contention that the murder was due in part to his addiction to video games.

Petric shot his mother and father in October 2007 after an argument over a video game and while his attorney didn’t contest the shooting he argued that his video game addiction made him less responsible for the act.

According to prosecutors Petric was enraged when his father forbid him to play the game “Halo 3,” a game in which the player shots alien monsters. He then found his father’s key to a lockbox where he removed the game and a 9mm gun.

In courtroom testimony Petric’s father, Mark Petric, a minister at the New Life Assembly of God in Wellington, Ohio, told the judge his son came into a room and asked his parents to shut their eyes so that he could give them a surprise. At that point he shot both of them in the head, killing his mother.

The judge in the case, James Burge, dismissed the defense attorney’s argument that Petric’s addiction to video games played a role in the shooting, pointing to evidence that showed the teen had planned the shooting for some time.

After shooting his parents Daniel Petric placed the gun in his father’s hand to make the scene appear like a murder-suicide.
