Jim
Rice finally punched his ticket into the baseball Hall of Fame after he
collected 76.4 percent of the vote on his last time appearing on the ballot
while Rickey Henderson coasted into Cooperstown after his name appeared on 94.8
percent of the ballots.
Rice,
long thought to be a glaring omission in the HOF, was a dominant slugger for the
Boston Red Sox in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He was named AL MVP in 1978,
was an eight-time All-Star and finished his career with a .298 batting average,
382 home runs and 1,451 RBIs.
Monday’s
announcement came on Rice’s 15th and final appearance on the ballot,
righting a wrong that had gone on too long.
Henderson,
considered by many to be the greatest leadoff hitter in history, in baseball’s
all-time leader in runs, stolen bases and leadoff homeruns, was named AL MVP in
1990, appeared in ten All-Star games while playing for nine different teams.
Andre
Dawson fell short of the required 75 percent to earn a ticket to the Hall,
finishing with 67 percent while Bert Blyleven was the next closest at 62.7
percent.
