5 Suspected Terrorists Arrested Near Nuclear Power Plant in England
Five men were arrested for suspicion of terrorism in
northeast England Monday during a routine vehicle stop near a nuclear power plant.
It is unclear what prompted the officers to make the arrests.
British authorities
announced the men were pulled over by officers of the Civil Nuclear
Constabulary near the Sellafield nuclear facility. They were arrested under the
Terrorism Act 2000, which allows the detainment of suspected terrorists for 48
hours.
"[The men] were taken to police custody in Carlisle
overnight and [were] being transported to Manchester this morning. The
investigation is being led by the North West Counter Terrorism Unit,” Cumbria
Constabulary said in a statement.
All five of the men are in their 20s. The Greater
Manchester Police said the arrests were not connected to the recent killing of
al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden by the United States military. After Bin Laden’s
death in Pakistan on Sunday, US officials warned that those loyal to al Qaeda may
retaliate.
