Mexican authorities say 14 miners were trapped in a mine
shaft in Coahuila state early Tuesday morning following an explosion. A civil
protection official said one miner was able to escape with arm injuries. The fate
of the other miners remains unclear as rescuers have been unable to contact
them.
"It's very painful for us. At this time we don't
know if the 14 miners trapped are dead or alive. It's going to be a complicated
operation because of the way the mine shaft was built. We’re all hoping the
miners are still alive,” Sabinas Mayor Jesus Montemayor Garza told CNN.
The explosion, which is believed to have been caused by a
buildup of methane gas, occurred at a mine run by BIMSA. The mine is located
just outside Sabinas.
