Derek
Lowe, considered by many to be the top free-agent pitcher still available, is
said to be close to a deal that would put him in an Atlanta Braves jersey for the
2009 season.
The
deal is said to be a four-year $60 million package that would make the righty
the Braves ace on a staff that still has plenty of questions.
Lowe,
35, has compiled a 126-107 record over 12 seasons with the Seattle Mariners, Boston
Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers. The New York Mets had made a push for Lowe but
were said to have lost interest after hearing he wanted a five-year deal.
In
desperate need of some stability in their rotation Atlanta stepped in after the
Mets stepped out and now appear ready to sign Lowe. The Braves have already
lost John Smoltz to the Red Sox and questions remain concerning the health of
Tom Glavine and Tim Hudson.
