Hillary Clinton Appears Before U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee in Secretary of State Confirmation Process

Hillary Clinton has begun testifying before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee as part of her confirmation process following her appointment as secretary of state.

In her opening testimony Clinton pledged to return to a time of diplomacy in foreign relations, declaring the United States would best be served by strengthening relationships with allies.

Clinton told the Committee “America cannot solve the most pressing problems on our own, and the world cannot solve them without America.”

While Clinton isn’t expected to face too many tough questions she will likely have to work her way through inquiries about her husband’s relationship with foreign donors. Those critical of Hillary Clinton’s appointment have pointed to a conflict of interest she would face as secretary of state. Bill Clinton has a long list of foreign donors, including foreign governments, to his charitable foundation.

The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee is expected to hold a vote on Clinton’s nomination on Thursday.
