France to lift ban on absinthe

By: Daun Lee

The notorious drink absinthe has been banned in countries for close to a hundred years, but France will make the drink legal again. Until now absinthe was legal in France as long as it wasn’t called absinthe. The drink also referred to as the “Green Fairy” is so intoxicating that authorities in various countries thought it to be too dangerous for consumption.

Absinthe is a high proof alcoholic beverage, which also contains wormwood. In small amounts wormwood, has supposed hallucinogenic properties and has a green hue, hence it nickname the “Green Fairy”.Wormwood gets its effects from thujone, in the heyday of absinthe the amount of thujone was twice what is currently present in modernly distilled absinthe. The drink was favored by artists like Vincent Van Gogh and Henry Toulouse-Lautrec and poet Paul Verlaine.

There was an alleged element of danger associated with absinthe because of its thujone content, but the real danger that absinthe posed was the high alcohol content, which is anywhere from 45 to 75 percent alcohol, making it a very intoxicating beverage and could make a DUI lawyer an important ally.

Consuming any alcoholic beverage, including absinthe poses dangers only if it is abused, and people decide to drive while intoxicated. A DUI attorney is the best way to avert some of the problems caused by a drunken driving charge. The ramifications of driving under the influence of any drug or alcohol are severe, but with a DUI lawyer the severity can be minimized.
