Bernstein Liebhard LLP Applauds the Creation of Two National Joint Registries

More than 700,000 knee and hip replacement surgeries take place in the United States each year, yet prior to the massive August 2010 recall of the DePuy ASR hip implants, which affected 37,000 recipients nationwide, there was no national joint registry to track and document the success and failure rates of prosthetic implants.  Moreover, a recent U.K. study suggests that 49 percent of the ASR XL Acetabular hip replacements, one of the devices included in the DePuy ASR hip implant recall could potentially fail – this staggering amount is almost four times greater than originally claimed by the company when it issued the DePuy ASR hip implant recall last August.  In light of these shocking statistics, the need for national registries has become increasingly evident.  Recently, two national registries were created to track and monitor hip and knee replacement surgeries in order to prevent another devastating catastrophe.  The lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are currently investigating and litigating cases on behalf of Bernstein Liebhard’s clients who have undergone DePuy ASR hip implant surgery and are offering free and confidential legal consultations to individuals who received the defective hip implants.

DePuy ASR Hip Recall Spurs Creation of Joint Registries

If the United States had an artificial joint registry that tracked and documented adverse event reports associated with the artificial hip implants, it is possible that the DePuy ASR hip implant recall could have been initiated earlier.  In response, two national registries have recently been created to track the success and failure rates of hip and knee implants.  The American Joint Replacement Registry will be funded and organized by members of the orthopedic industry, while the University of Massachusetts Medical School Registry will be federally funded and consider patient assessment as well as track success and failure rates.  It is our hope that these newly established registries will detect complications early, forcing manufacturers to address adverse event reports, and protect patients from being implanted with defective medical devices in the future.

Since DePuy was forced to recall the defective ASR hip implants in August, Bernstein Liebhard LLP has provided a wealth of consumer information concerning both the Pinnacle and ASR hip systems on its website, www.consumerinjurylawyers.com.  If you or a loved one have had hip replacement surgery and have been implanted with a defective DePuy hip, you may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages and other injuries.
