U.S.
President George Bush has awarded former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair the country’s
highest civilian award, the Medal of Freedom, during a ceremony in Washington
just one week before Bush is scheduled to leave office.
Blair
was a staunch ally of the United States, most notably in the aftermath of the September
11 attacks, something not lost on Bush who noted “He was there in a moment of
trial to affirm the special relationship between the US and UK and he was there
to show America and all nations that he understood the stakes on the war on
terror.”
While
the relationship between Bush and Blair was closely followed during the aftermath
of Sept. 11 the two have had a strong friendship that has extended past the
terror attacks. In presenting Blair with the Medal of Freedom Bush stated, “I knew
that when either of us gets in a bind, there will be a friend on the other end
of the phone.”
Also
receiving the Medal of Freedom on Tuesday were Colombian President Alvaro Uribe
and former Australian PM John Howard.
