At Least 5 Miners Killed in Explosion in Mexico
Mexican officials say at least 5 miners were killed in Tuesday’s
explosion at a mine in northern Mexico. So far, there is only one known
survivor. The 15-year-old miner was able to escape Tuesday, but he suffered
severe injuries and had both arms amputated. Rescue workers continue to search
for 9 other men still trapped underground.
Labor Secretary Javier Lozano Alarcon identified the dead
as Julio Cesar Resendiz Dominguez, Mario Alberto Anguiano Montes, Leobardo
Sanchez Santos, Isaias Valero Perez and Juan Carlos Escobedo Chavez. The names
of the missing men were not released.
Mexico’s attorney general’s office said the cause of the
explosion is under investigation. It is believed a buildup of methane gas is responsible.
The mine is owned by BINSA and is located near the town of Sabinas in Coahuila
state.
