Israeli Offensive Intensifies as Battles Rage with Hamas Militants Near Gaza City

Israel’s military offensive in the Gaza Strip intensified on Wednesday as soldiers pushed closer to Gaza City and engaged in gun battles with Hamas militants while airstrikes continued to pound strategic locations tied to the Palestinian militant group.

More than half the 60 air strikes carried out targeted tunnels used by Hamas to smuggle weapons.

While Israel has stepped up their fighting in Gaza they have refrained from an all-out ground operation which many believe would cause heavy casualties. Reports have already suggested that nearly 1,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel began its offensive on Dec. 27.

Israel’s airstrikes were prompted by the continued rocket attacks launched by Hamas. Both sides have ignored calls from the international community to respect a ceasefire, each demanding certain conditions be met before weapons are laid down.

Hamas has called for Israel to end its blockade of Gaza while Israel has demanded an end to rocket attacks launched by Hamas into southern Israel.
