Sudan Military Admits to Series of Bombings in Darfur

The Sudanese military has acknowledged they carried out a series of bombings in the Darfur region, targeting rebels who had failed to back a ceasefire agreement that was announced in November.

According to a senior government official the government said they had information that suggested rebels had been planning a series of attacks ahead of a ruling by the International Criminal Court concerning war crimes allegedly carried out by Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir.

A decision on whether or not an arrest warrant will be issued by the ICC is expected by the end of the month.

Sudan has warned an arrest warrant would only escalate the violence between the Darfur rebels and militias loyal to the government. Over the past six years more than 300,000 have died as a result of violence in Darfur.
