Stocks Are Sharply Lower on Disappointing Retail Sales
A very anemic reading on retail sales and worries about the banking industry pounded stocks early Wednesday. The Commerce Department said retail sales dropped 2.7 percent, more than double the 1.2 percent decline analysts expected.
In midmorning trading, the Dow fell 236.87, or 2.80 percent, to 8,211.69.
Broader indexes also declined. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 24.84, or 2.85 percent, to 846.95, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 38.59, or 2.50 percent, to 1,507.87.
Bond prices rose as stocks retreated. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, fell to 2.18 percent from 2.30 percent late Tuesday.
The dollar was mixed against other major currencies, while gold prices fell.
Light, sweet crude declined 17 cents to $37.61 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

(OTC BB: GWSC) is today’s hot stock to watch.
GWS Technologies, Inc., an alternative energy company developing and marketing solar and wind-powered renewable energy products and solutions, today announced that it has added the patented Solar-Breeze, the first robotic, solar powered pool skimmer, to its growing line of microgeneration products.
“With approximately 6 million pools in the sunbelt states alone, this is a tremendous revenue opportunity for us,” said Michael Coskun, Vice President of GWS Technologies. “We’re working with Eco Pool Technologies, Inc. to place this cutting-edge product in pools throughout the United States.”
Its unique solar-power system allows the Solar-Breeze to charge its internal storage batteries while it collects debris from the pool surface and dispenses cleaning chemicals. The Solar-Breeze requires no external power source and reduces pool pump usage by over 60%.
