Illinois
Gov. Rod Blagojevich will be overseeing the swearing-in of the state’s new
senate; a bizarre twist of fate as the chamber’s first order of business will be
to determine whether or not they will remove Blagojevich from office.
Blagojevich
was impeached by a vote of 114-1 on Friday following allegations that he illegally
attempted to sell government services through bribes. The two-term Democrat was
also accused of trying to sell the vacated Senate seat left behind by
President-elect Barack Obama.
Blagojevich
will preside over the Senate until the Democrats elect a majority leader. That
leader will be John Cullerton of Chicago who will take the position from the
retiring Emil Jones.
Cullerton
has already said he hopes the impeachment trial, scheduled to begin Jan. 26,
moves swiftly and finished by Feb. 4.
