The
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will be inducting an eclectic class in 2009 with a
blend of rap/hip hop, heavy metal, blues rock, doo-wop and soul each finding
their way into the Cleveland institution.
Heading
up the list this year will be Run-DMC, the rap trio that brought the world or
hip hop and rock together with their “Walk This Way” collaboration with
Aerosmith. Considered by many to be the most influential rap group of all time
Run-DMC put rap music in the main stream media.
Joseph
“Run” Simmons and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels will be in attendance for the April 4
induction but have already said they would not be performing. They have not
performed as a group since Jam Master Jay was murdered in his recording studio
in 2002.
Metallica
will also be heading into the Hall after more than a quarter of a century
dominating the heavy metal scene. One of the most successful and recognizable
bands in the world, Metallica has won seven Grammy Awards, three Billboard
Music Awards and a pair of American Music awards while selling more than 60
million albums in the U.S. alone.
Jeff
Beck, considered one of the greatest guitar players of all time, blended rock,
blues, jazz and heavy metal to rank #14 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of
finest axmen. He has collected four Grammy Awards and continues to be a major
influence in several genres of music.
Bobby
Womack made his way into the Hall for his work as a soul singer and songwriter.
He penned #1 hits for the Rolling Stones and New Birth and enjoyed plenty of
success penning his own songs.
Little
Anthony and the Imperials will also be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame on April 4 for their doo-wop sound.
